How it works

How the Stick Purifies Water

Takesumi is a water treatment first. Here is the full cycle, from the first boil to the day a spent stick moves on to its second life.

    Rinse and boil

    Rinse the stick and boil it about 10 minutes to open the pores.

  2. 02

    Drop it in

    Place it in a carafe, bottle or pitcher of tap water.

  3. 03

    It adsorbs

    Bamboo charcoal carries about four times more pores than hardwood charcoal, so it works fast. In roughly four hours the porous carbon adsorbs chlorine and off-tastes, and releases trace minerals into the water. Each Japanese stick treats up to 2.5L per filtration.

  4. 04

    Reactivate and reuse

    Boil it again every couple of weeks to keep it working. One stick lasts about six months in daily use.

  5. 05

    A second life after the carafe

    When a stick has done its months in water, it keeps giving. Dried out, it deodorises a fridge or a drawer, buffers damp in a cupboard, then feeds the garden. Nothing is wasted.

What does "takesumi" mean and where does it come from?

Takesumi (竹炭) is the Japanese word for bamboo charcoal: take means bamboo and sumi means charcoal. It is made by carbonising bamboo, our Japanese grade from Moso bamboo, at high heat until the wood becomes a hard, porous carbon. The term is Japanese, but the sticks we supply come from both China and Japan.

What is the difference between takesumi and binchotan?

Both are Japanese-style charcoals used to treat water, but the raw material differs. Takesumi is bamboo charcoal. Binchotan is white charcoal made from ubame oak, denser and sold as a premium grade. Takesumi is lighter and very porous, purifies water in about four hours against roughly eight for binchotan, and generally more accessible on price.

How does takesumi purify water?

The carbonised bamboo is riddled with micro-pores, about four times more than hardwood charcoal, that adsorb chlorine and off-tastes. Rinse a stick, drop it into a carafe or fountain, and leave it about four hours; a Japanese stick treats up to 2.5L per filtration and releases trace minerals into the water. Boil it every couple of weeks to refresh the pores.

What is the difference between flat and round takesumi sticks?

It is mostly the vessel and the look. Flat sticks slip into bottles and flasks. Round sticks sit neatly in carafes and jugs. Both are our Chinese-origin references. The wide flat sticks are the Japanese reference, carbonised from Moso bamboo between 800 and 1200°C in the binchotan tradition, and their size filters twice as fast.
